In 1944, the seed of the Ayurved Sevak Sangha, a benevolent Society, was sown at Contai Jatiya Vidyalaya by a renowned physician and freedom fighter Kabiraj Late Raghunath Maity, Ayurvedacharya, with a view to perform 8-point activities under the common banner of Vaidyaka Pathshala, for serving the society through intensive propagation of the AYURVEDIC system of Medicine.
After independence, Kabiraj Maity, author of many valuable books on Ayurveda, dedicated himself for starting an Ayurveda College in the month of November, 1949 under the supervision and management of Ayurved Sevak Sangha, which was registered on 3rd August, 1956, as a Society. The College was running a 3- years ASF Course (DAMS) with a hospital of 12(twelve) beds under the society, and with the affiliation of the West Bengal Ayurveda Parisad. The course continued up to the session 1979-80.
In 1977-78, the BAMS course was introduced throughout the country. Our State obviously introduced BAMS degree course replacing the ASF course. Since 1977-78, the Sangha has been trying its best to start BAMS course as per guidelines prescribed by CCIM, New Delhi. But the paucity of fund stood on the way.
With the whole hearted efforts of Late Prof. Sudhir Kumar Giri, Ex-M.P. and Ex-Vice President of the Sangha, and Sri Prasanta Pradhan, Ex-M.P. the then member of the Sangha, it has improved the infrastructure of the institution. Sri Sisir Kumar Adhikari, M.P. & EX-Minister of State for Rural Development, Government of India, & Sri Subhendu Adhikari, M.P. has not only helped a lot in setting up the infrastructure of the college but has played an important role to get the final approval of the department of AYUSH, New Delhi, to start BAMS degree Course in 2013-14. A number of well-wishers of this locality have extended their heartful sympathetic hands by way of active supports and/or donations in order to fulfill the statutory requirements and infrastructure of the college.
The Raghunath Ayurved Mahavidyalaya and Hospital now starts to run. We do not claim it to be a model College at present, but our dream is to make it so. We have miles to go before we reach the goal.
