From the Desk of Principal

RAGHUNATH AYURVED MAHAVIDYALAYA & HOSPITAL

–its glory in the past & present.

Prof. (Dr.) Sushil Kumar Nath, M.D(Ay.), Ph.D (IMS, BHU),
Principal, Raghunath Ayurved Mahavidyalaya & Hosptial,
Contai,Purba Medinipur (W.B.)

This institute started its journey in 1944 just before the end of British era in India. Kabiraj Raghunath Maity, a famous  Ayurvedic practitioner of the area (Contai), a freedom fighter & a social worker, founded this institution under the umbrella of Trust – “Ayurved Sevak Sangha’ (A non-profit & non-political organization) which he also established himself in 1944.

In the early days – a course with title “ASF” was used to be taught in this Mahavidyalaya with a hospital having both OPD & IPD facilities. Around one thousand of students came out from this institution successfully with “ASF” designation and made their name & fame as Ayurvedic Practitioners in local area and different parts of West Bengal as well. Many got the opportunity to enter into the Government Services as Ayurvedic Medical Officer, Research Officer & sometime as a pharmacist who have performed their job successfully in their respective area.

From the beginning, the hospital unit of this institution was very popular in this area because of its rendering service to the patients with great care & dedication. Hospital service has never been stopped since its inception till today through its long history of existence.

“ASF” course was abolished in 1980 in this institutions when CCIM (Central Council of Indian Medicine) regulated BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery) Course uniformly started throughout the Country (India) in Seventies of last century. State Government took over three college from private organizations then in West Bengal – namely J.B.Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital for conducting Under-Graduate course, Institute of post Graduate Ayurvedic Education & Research at SVSP for Post-Graduate course & Vishwanath Ayurved College for Ayurvedic Pharmacy Course . All other private institutions were closed of its teaching unit in West Bengal including the “Raghunath Ayurved Mahavidyalaya & Hospital. But this institute has continued its hospital OPD & IPD service as before with great care & responsibility till date. Apothecary unit (Ayurvedic Medicines’ preparation unit) also has been existing here since the beginning & always remains the main source of supplying  medicines for hospital OPD & IPD service.

In the beginning of this century (21st Century) some members of the ‘Trust’ started to take initiative to start the BAMS course here. After the long continuous endeavor finally in  year 2012 this institution entered into a new chapter by getting necessary permission to start the BAMS course with the capacity of 50 seats per year from Central council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) , a regulatory body under the department of AYUSH, Govt. of India, and it started functioning under the academic umbrella of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. So, in 2013 the first batch of BAMS students got admitted here, and this institute had started its journey as under graduate college. This was a remarkable achievement – a dream came true because of the constant effort & dedication of some members of the ‘Trust’ (Ayurved Sevak Sangha).

Since then this institute has been continuously growing in different aspects. A bunch of sincere & dedicated teachers, non-teaching staff, Para-medical staff, Nurses & other staff have been recruited here. The atmosphere of college & hospital units is made favorable & congenial for works & studies for all. Students from various parts of eastern & north-eastern States are coming here for the studies. The Hospital Unit is also functioning with great fame and reputation for its qualitative & dedicated service. For this, the students get high exposure in their clinical training.

A beautiful herbal garden is nurtured in the college premises in its courtyard which houses hundreds of species of medicinal herbs & plants. This helps the students to keep themselves in constant touch with the medicinal herbs & plants in their learning process. The apothecary unit, at present, produces more than hundred Ayurvedic Medicines regularly to meet the requirement of medicines for OPD & IPD services of the hospital.

The institute has now 14 academic departments as per rule & regulations of the CCIM/NCISM.
They are namely – Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine) , Shalya (Surgery), Shalakya (Eye & ENT), Prasuti & Stree Roga (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), Koumarabhritya (Paediatrics), Panchakarma ( Five special purification measures), Dravyaguna (Plant Pharmacology), Rasashastra (Mineral & Metal Pharmacology), Nidan (Pathology), Swasthabhritya (Hygiene), Agadtantra (Jurisprudence & Toxicology ), Samhita & Siddhanta (Basic Principle), Sharirkirya (Physiology) & Sharir Rachana (Anatomy). All the departments of this institute are very spacious, airy, well equipped and decorated which are very helpful for the students for their learning process. The Laboratory facilities specially for Physiological and Pathological practical works are optimum for students. Rasashastra department has also a well equipped laboratory for practical works where the student can learn the different kinds of preparation of medicines. This institute has a good Dissection hall where students are taught by demonstrating the different parts of Dead bodies. This institute has its own hostel accommodation for girl’s students. Boy’s students are accommodated in a private hostel nearby – affiliated by the college.

At presents, there are 50 (Fifty) under graduate seats in our institute per year, and admission is done through all India NEET examination – the entry test for any medical colleges in India. NEET qualified students are only eligible for admission in our college or any other medical colleges.

At the end, it is noteworthy to mention that at present Govt. is giving priority for the  development of Ayurvedic systems of medicine and other indigenous systems of medicine. So, the youth, after their XII class board examinations with science subjects (Physics, Chemistry & Biology),  may opt for the BAMS course in order to make a bright future for themselves. Hope, good days will prevail soon for Ayurvedic system of medicine.
