The Institute :-
‘Raghunath Ayurved Mahavidyalaya & Hospital’ is run by a ‘Trust- Ayurved Sevak Sangha ’ (A non-profit organization) which was founded in the year 1944 by Kaviraj Raghunath Maity, a famous Ayurvedic practioner, freedom fighter & a social worker in this area. Its hospital section started functioning from the beginning in 1944, and the academic activities started from the year 1949 with teaching an Ayurvedic course titled ‘ASF’ (Ayurvedic state faculties). This ‘ASF’ course was taught successfully till 1980, and more than one thousand students passed out from this institution who established themselves as good Ayurvedic practioners in the different parts of West Bengal & neighboring States. Many entered into the government services as Medical Officer, Research Officer & as Ayurvedic Pharmacist as well.
The ‘ASF’ course was abolished here in 1980 when CCIM (Central Council of Indian Medicine) regulated BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery) course uniformly started throughout the Country in the seventies of the last century. State government then took over three colleges of Kolkata from private organization for conducting Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate & Ayurvedic pharmacy courses, and all other private colleges in West Bengal were closed in respect of their academic activities including ours.
But our Institute has continued its hospital OPD & IPD services as before with great care & responsibilities till today.
In the year 2013, after the long continuous endeavor of some members of the Trust, CCIM affiliated & regulated BAMS course started in this institution under the academic umbrella of West Bengal University of Health sciences with 50 students admission capacity per year. Since then we are maintaining the academic & hospital activities here successfully till today – but though with great difficulties in financial aspect. Despite the financial restraint we have provided the services to the Covid-19 patients since last one year by making our hundred bedded hospital a ‘SAFE HOME’ under the guidance & some financial assistance of state government. We have also opened a facilities for vaccination against Covid-19 infection and it is still running.
At present we have following Important infrastructure:-
- Total Land area – 8 acre 74 decimals (Approx).
- A big herbal garden with more than 100 species of medicinal herbs/plants.
- A well equiped Apothecary Unit (Medicine producing section).
- College Building with big & airy class rooms and Academic departments as per the guidelines of CCIM/NCISM
- CCIM/NCISM directed OPD infrastructure & 100 bedded IPD infrastructure.
- A large & Good office complex
in addition we have some sincere & dedicated teaching & non-teaching staff.
Location of the Campus and Communication :
The Raghunath Ayurved Mahavidyalaya and Hospital is situated at Contai (Kanthi) at the heart of Contai Town beside the Central Bus Stand. A large three storied building and a few other buildings constitue the institute. It has a 100 bedded well-equipped and well-staffed Ayurvedic Hospital. The present college campus has 1.5 acres of land comprising the buildings and a well-nursed medicinal plants garded. The Institute is situated only 1km away form the Railway Station, on Howrah-Digha Railway Line. The buses destined to Digha from Kolkata/Howrah via Contai reach the institue within three and half hours. Buses are available in every 15 minutes throughout the day and night. The Institute has 7.48 acres of developed land about two (2) kilometer away at Durmuth adjacent to ad degree College ‘Deshpran Mahavidyalaya’.
The College has received the approval of The Department of AYUSH of the Ministry of Health and Famly Welfare of the Government of Inida in 2013-14. has been recognized by the Government of West Bengal and affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences
Academic Course :
Four and half years Degree Course on BAMS ( Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and surgery) has been divided into 4 (four) professionals. The BAMS Course is also known as the course of ‘Ayurvedacharya’. After completion of four and half years course there will be internship of one year and fianlly House Staffship for at least one year.
Medicinal Plants Garden:
At present the Institute has a medicinal plants garden of about 50 decimal in its college premises. A tow-acre medicinal plants garden is being raised at its Durmuth-premises. The Plants are reared by expearts and the student can get a hand-on experience on procedures form germination to propagation techniques of all the experience medicinal plants and learn about cultivation practice of each of these plants.
Students Facility :
Students life at the institute is desingnated to be interdisciplinary and intended to carry into the community. Proximity could enable students from different backgrounds to maintain a society of convivality and reciprocal interest. Qualities like sharing and mutual tolerance are surely to be inculcated on the students through participation on a calender of cultural entertainment and recreational programs and events including sports, specially lectures, seminars and symposia etc. The student will get every opportunity to build up their personlity
along with their career during the course of their studies in this institute.
Dress Code :
Dress Code is now accepted globally for its proven multiple benefits. As such college uniform has been made compulsory as it helps to bring a sense of discipline, sensce of belonging and professional attitude leading students to achieve a better edge on the present highly competitve job market. Student will have to collect uniform including tie, socks and the emblem of the institue form Authorized Agency of the Institute for which payment has to be made separately.
The Hostels for Boys and Girls are under construction on the said land. A medicinal plants Garden is being raised on the said land. The institue can boast of its patriotic heritage, clam, open green and airy campus, which will, ofcourse , make learning experineces enjoyable in the lap of nature. A lot of development works are under process to make the institute a model one.
The Classrooms and the sitting agreements of Heads of the Departments have been arranged following specifications prescribed by he Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM). We will provide all sorts of electroic equipments like LCD and over head projectors (OHP) with screen facilities etc. In the class rooms very soon. The dissection-room is well- equipped and enriched with different models and charts.
The Laboratory facilities are fully operational and are in conformity with thw class orientation. Facilites will be upgraded continuously to keep abreast with the latest development in the field of Ayurveda.
This is an important part of our institution which offers a rich collection of Ayurvedic books and references covering all about the disciplines taught and the related subjects. Different journals are procured to visalize the global up-to-date develpoment in medicines both ayurvedic and modern. The institute is planning to have a well-equipped electronic library with internet connectivity, e-journals, CD-ROM , floppies , audio-video metarials and reprographic facilites.
The Institute is proud of its handpicked faculty, chosen form diverse and relevant academi experiences. Their scholarly knowledge levels, prgmatic and practical outlook, high qulalification, extra ordinary skill-sets and utmost sincerity are the hallmarks for arhieving an outstanding standard outdoor. Further modernization of the hospital is under process.
Extra Curricular Activities:
The College will conduct developmental programmes like workshops seminars, symposiums, exhibitions, quiz contest , excursions etc. Our Durmuth premises is ideal for these activates. Provisions of Indoor games are there. In the college premises itself Canteen service has been provided. On demand the student may get the arranded facifty of hostel accommodation till- the hostels of our Cortege are built up.
